Microsoft‘s (MSFT) maligned Windows 8 operating system still trails the company’s hated Windows Vista release in usage, according to May data from Net Applications.

Perhaps more embarrassing is the fact that Windows 8′s predecessor, Windows 7, gained market share last month.

Seven months after Window 8′s launch, just 4.3% of PC users are using the operating system. That May figure is up a tad from the 3.8% usage number in April. But it still lags Windows Vista, which had 4.5% usage share last month.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s respected Windows 7 operating system, which fixed the bugs in Vista, gained market share in May. Net Applications says 44.9% of PC users worldwide were using Windows 7 in May, up from 44.7% in April. While Windows 7 is no longer available to consumers, corporations are still installing the software on new PCs.

Microsoft is working to fix the major complaints with Windows 8 and plans to release a new operating system, Windows 8.1, this year. Windows 8.1 is expected to bring back the familiar start button, which Microsoft had removed in favor of program tiles.

Many PC users were put off by Windows 8′s radically redesigned user interface, which was designed for touch screens, not input from keyboards and mice.

Microsoft holds a commanding lead in PC operating systems, with 91.7% of the market in May. But Apple‘s (AAPL) Mac OS inched up to 7.1% in May from 7% in April. Microsoft lost 0.1 point of market share last month and Apple rose by the same amount.

Windows PC sales have been slow in recent quarters, with the trend blamed on the shift to tablets and consumer dislike of Windows 8.

Microsoft shares rose 2% in the stock market on Monday.
